Leah Shaw is a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and film composer whose music blends intimate vocals with acoustic folk and ambient electronic elements. Shaw has released two EPs and several singles. Her full-length album Play Beautifully, a sonic exploration of loss, healing and self-transformation, debuts this year. From an early age, Shaw studied classical music and sang in the church where she learned music arranging and improvisation. Encouraged by her mother, Shaw's biggest fan and a musician also, Shaw went on to study orchestral music in college, and though she had aspirations of creating her own music she was discouraged from pursuing them due to the music industry's tumultuous state, and upon graduating Shaw left music behind. However, two years later Shaw's mother was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease, and Shaw returned home to help care for her. She found work at a local winery, and when they needed a house band, Shaw stepped in, then turned to songwriting as a way to cope with her mother's illness. Shaw relocated to New York City in 2012 to pursue her music. She began busking in the subway, then graduated to above ground venues, touring along the East Coast and releasing two EPs. In 2016, her mother passed away, and Shaw returned to graduate school to study music production and film scoring. There, she teamed up with producer Teo Blake to create her debut full-length album, Play Beautifully, dedicated to her mother's memory.
